Nyungwe National Park lies in Rwanda’s southwest and is famous for being one of Africa’s best preserved mountain rainforests. With a chimpanzee population of over 500, chimp tracking is the most commonly known activity in the park, followed by the 160 m/525 ft canopy walk. For birders, this is the top birding destination of the Gorilla Highlands region. It is also possible to do black and white colobus monkey tracking and enjoy abundant hiking.
As a result of its success in Akagera National Park, in 2020 African Parks — a conservation NGO from South Africa — signed an agreement to manage Nyungwe as well.
