Koko Bridge Reopens After 13 Years

After more than a decade of disuse, the Koko Bridge connecting Musasa to Gihango sector that leads to Bumba has finally been repaired and reopened to the public. This long-awaited restoration allows travellers to cross the river safely, eliminating the need for makeshift crossings. Previously, hikers and bikers on the Congo Nile Trail had to wade through the river, causing terror to some.

The reopened bridge is expected to boost movement between Bumba, Musasa, Kinunu, Cyimbili, and Gisenyi, offering a faster route for those coming from Kibuye. It also provides easier access to popular Congo Nile Trail destinations like Bumba Guest House, Rushel Kivu Lodge and many others.

The road runs from Bumba base camp through the Congonile village, down to the bridge, and continues through Musasa and Kinunu in Boneza Sector. From there, it winds through Cyimbili before rejoining the main road at Kivumu in Nyamyumba Sector, just outside Gisenyi. The road is also undergoing repair which means tourists who wish can drive along the trail.

With the bridge back in use, both locals and tourists can expect more direct and scenic journeys across the region.
