Rest in Peace, Pleasure Katusiime (June 2024 – April 2025)

Before we all dive headfirst into the craziness of a new week, we want to take a moment and raise a feathered toast to a tiny legend who somehow stole all our hearts — our cheeky little Pleasure Katusiime (or just PK, if you were lucky enough to know her). She wasn’t just flapping about looking pretty. PK chirped her way into our routines, poked her beak into everything, and became part of the gang without even trying.

Here’s how we’ve been dealing with saying goodbye …

SERENE PLEASURE:

My deep love for birds led me, so full of excitement, to bring you and your hubby to Edirisa on Lake Bunyonyi in late October. I wanted you to be part of our little family. But tragedy struck — your partner was taken by an Augur Buzzard, leaving you alone.

Last week, at just nine months old, you too were gone, and in the most heartbreaking way. In a desperate attempt to escape a Martial Eagle, you ended up in the waters of Lake Bunyonyi. I watched you fight for your life, and I felt helpless. In that moment, I wished more than anything that I knew how to swim. A fishermen in a canoe tried to save you, but he was too late.

You were everywhere: graceful, playful, cleaning up our leftovers, always near. We had once considered clipping your wings to keep you close and safe — but decided not to, thinking you’d better be free …

ARTHUR MUSINGUZI:

I enjoyed every moment of watching you supervise our place, you entertaining, welcoming little friend.

Fly free, PK!

BRENDA KATUSIIME:

I always marvelled at how bird-smart you were, choosing your sleeping spot well and knowing when to settle in.

I’d talk to you like I would to anyone, and you always seemed to listen. Everyone knew your fondness for rice — you were never left out. But I knew you even better. I was aware of your secret love for roasted peanuts. Snack time won’t be the same without you.

I’ll miss your calm. Rest in peace.

LEVI AYEBARE:

You filled our days with joy, love, and the gentle flutter of wings. You weren’t just a bird. You were family. Our cleaner. Our constant companion, here on the shores of Lake Bunyonyi.

Watching you play with Sammy, your new cat friend, added colour to my days. I promise I’ll tell that story soon.

You left too soon, our sweet one.
