The Joys & Trials of Visiting 14 Kisoro Accommodations
Imagine enjoying breakfast on a little island bathed in gorgeous morning sunshine — who wouldn’t love that? The tasty eats on Gahiza Island were the absolute highlight of our familiarisation trip in Uganda’s Kisoro District last week.
Sasha, our 22-year-old Rwandan team member, and Maani, a 17-year-old Slovenian/Ugandan, had a blast. As our tour arrangers based in Musanze, this trip was an exciting opportunity for them to connect faces and places with the emails and WhatsApps in their inboxes. While our Gahiza host David was part of our All-Hands get-together, others were meeting them for the first time.
Both Maani and Sasha say that having their messages ignored by accommodation providers is the most frustrating part of their job. After their Kisoro outing, they can add atrocious roads to the list of professional challenges … But after a day and a half of sluggish progress around Lakes Chahafi and Mutanda and near Mgahinga NP we eventually achieved our goals. We managed to check on 14 places we may use for our hikers.
Gorilla Highlands Trails, which link mountain lakes and gorilla national parks, thankfully rely more on your walking prowess than on driving stamina. But once you finish your hiking day, it’s important that the overnight stay meets your expectations and wallet power.
Our main point of interest was Mgahinga Gorilla Triangle Lodge where 24 guests from Dubai will be sleeping in August. It all shows great promise as manager Vita committed to making several improvements before the group’s arrival.

Just a decade ago, Lake Mutanda and it’s environs was like a blank page. Stunningly beautiful, with breathtaking views but little information about this incredible part of the world. We are happy that Gorilla Highlands Experts has consistently pushed the region to the world, we, at Gahiza Island Retreat are humbled to be part of the Sustainable Tourism Development story on Lake Mutanda.
And we shall continue doing that — it’s a spectacular lake!
